What is PiHole?
Pi-hole is a Linux network-level advertisement and internet tracker blocking application which acts as a DNS sinkhole, intended for use on a home network.
Pi-hole has the ability to block traditional website adverts as well as adverts in unconventional places, such as smart TVs and mobile operating system adverts. The Pi-hole makes use of dnsmasq, cURL, lighttpd, PHP and the AdminLTE Dashboard to block DNS requests for known tracking and advertising domains.
By installing PiHole on Mac, we can achieve native-like ad blocking behavior, system wide.
You will need:
- Docker - to install Docker using homebrew, run :
brew cask install docker
- Understanding of Mac Startup Scripts.
Open Terminal and run
docker pull oswalpalash/adblock docker run -d --name pihole -e ServerIP=$(ipconfig getifaddr en0) -e WEBPASSWORD="Password" -e DNS1=18.104.22.168 -p 80:80 -p 53:53/tcp -p 53:53/udp -p 443:443 oswalpalash/adblock:latest networksetup -setdnsservers Wi-Fi 127.0.0.1
Navigate to http://pi.hole/admin using the Password in the command above to see Ad Blocking Statistics.
